Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans quickly became a prominent city in the southern United States. The city’s strategic location along the Mississippi River made it a key port for trade and commerce, attracting settlers from all over the world. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New Orleans thrived as a hub for the slave trade and the center of the Creole culture. The city’s unique blend of French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences led to a vibrant music, food, and arts scene that still defines New Orleans today. Throughout its history, New Orleans has faced challenges such as devastating fires, yellow fever outbreaks, and the destruction caused by hurricanes, most notably Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Despite these setbacks, the resilience and spirit of its residents have allowed the city to rebuild and continue to thrive as a cultural and economic center in the American South.
