New Haven, Connecticut was founded in 1638 by English Puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton. Originally known as Quinnipiac, the settlers chose the name New Haven in recognition of their new beginning in America. The city quickly became a center of trade and commerce due to its prime location on the Long Island Sound. In the 18th century, New Haven played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, serving as a key supply depot for the Continental Army. After the war, New Haven became a hub of industrial innovation, with companies like Winchester Repeating Arms and Sargent Manufacturing establishing headquarters in the city. In the 19th and 20th centuries, New Haven continued to thrive as a center of education and culture, with the founding of Yale University in 1701 and the establishment of the renowned Yale School of Art and Yale School of Music. Today, New Haven is a vibrant city known for its rich history, diverse culture, and thriving arts scene.
