New Haven, Connecticut was founded in 1638 by English Puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton. The settlers established the town as a place where they could freely practice their religious beliefs without persecution. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, New Haven prospered as a center for trade and shipping due to its ideal location on Long Island Sound. In the 19th century, New Haven became known for its thriving industrial economy, particularly in firearms manufacturing and clock making. It continues to be a hub for innovation, education, and the arts in Connecticut.
