Nags Head, located in Dare County, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The town got its name from the pirate lore that once surrounded the area, as legend has it that pirates would tie lanterns around the necks of their horses to lure ships onto the treacherous shoals. In the 19th century, Nags Head became a popular vacation destination for wealthy families from the Northeast looking to escape the city heat. The construction of the first hotel in 1838 marked the beginning of the town’s development as a resort community. Nags Head experienced rapid growth in the 20th century with the completion of the Wright Memorial Bridge in 1930, connecting the town to the mainland. The opening of the Outer Banks highway in 1957 further boosted tourism and development in the area. Today, Nags Head is known for its beautiful beaches, historic landmarks, and charming beach cottages, making it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
