Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1700s when the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes. The city’s name is believed to have come from the wax myrtle trees that once grew abundantly in the region. In the late 19th century, Myrtle Beach began to develop as a popular seaside resort destination, attracting visitors with its beautiful beaches and warm climate. The arrival of the railroad in the early 1900s further boosted tourism, leading to the construction of hotels, restaurants, and attractions along the coast. During World War II, Myrtle Beach was home to an air force base that trained pilots for the war effort. After the war, the city continued to grow as a vacation destination, with the construction of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and the establishment of golf courses and shopping centers. Today, Myrtle Beach is known as a vibrant and bustling city that welcomes millions of visitors each year to enjoy its pristine beaches, entertainment options, and Southern charm.
