Montgomery, Alabama has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1819. Named after General Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War hero, the city quickly became a hub for cotton and slave trading in the antebellum South. During the Civil War, Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederate States of America before the government moved to Richmond, Virginia. After the war, Montgomery became a center for the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. It was here that Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The city was also the site of the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965, which played a pivotal role in the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
