Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1702 by French colonists, Mobile, Alabama has a rich history that spans centuries. It was originally named Fort Louis de la Mobile and served as the first capital of French Louisiana. Over the years, the city changed hands several times, coming under Spanish and then American control. During the Civil War, Mobile was an important Confederate port and was heavily fortified by the Confederates. The city was eventually captured by Union forces in 1865, leading to its surrender and occupation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mobile experienced a period of rapid industrialization and growth, becoming an important port city and center for shipbuilding, aerospace, and manufacturing. The city also played a role in the civil rights movement, with events such as the Mobile Bus Boycotts in the 1950s. Today, Mobile is a vibrant cultural and economic hub, known for its Mardi Gras celebrations, historic architecture, and diverse population.
