Missoula, Montana, named after the Salish word for “place of cold, lingering water,” has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. Originally inhabited by the Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Bitterroot tribes, the area became a hub for fur trading in the early 1800s. In 1866, the settlement of Missoula was established as a strategic military fort along the Mullan Road, which connected the Missouri River to the Pacific Northwest. By the late 1800s, Missoula had developed into a bustling town with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway, attracting settlers and entrepreneurs looking to take advantage of the lucrative lumber and mining industries.
