Minneapolis, Minnesota, known as the “City of Lakes,” has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The city was founded in 1856 by John H. Stevens and Franklin Steele on the banks of the Mississippi River. Initially a hub of lumber and flour milling industries, Minneapolis quickly grew into a bustling metropolis with the completion of the St. Anthony Falls Waterpower District in 1880. By the early 20th century, the city became known for its cultural attractions, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center. Minneapolis also played a significant role in the civil rights movement, with leaders like Roy Wilkins and Hubert H. Humphrey working to end racial discrimination. Today, Minneapolis is a diverse and vibrant city, known for its beautiful parks, thriving arts scene, and strong economy. It continues to be a center of innovation and progress, attracting residents and visitors from around the world.
