Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1867 by former slaves seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions of the American South. Originally named “Crane Creek Settlement,” it quickly grew into a bustling town as more settlers arrived seeking an opportunity for a better life. The town was officially incorporated as Melbourne in 1888, named after the city of Melbourne in Australia in hopes of attracting more settlers and businesses. Melbourne continued to flourish as a center for agriculture, with citrus and cotton farming becoming major industries in the area. The construction of the Florida East Coast Railway in the early 20th century further boosted the town’s economy, allowing for easier transportation of goods and people. During World War II, Melbourne became an important hub for the military, with the establishment of several naval air bases in the area. This led to a population boom and the development of new infrastructure and neighborhoods. Today, Melbourne is a vibrant city known for its beautiful beaches, rich cultural scene, and strong aerospace and technology industries.
