Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1867 by a group of settlers looking to create a new community along the Indian River Lagoon. Originally named “Crane Creek,” the town quickly grew due to its strategic location as a shipping hub for goods traveling between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. In 1884, the town was officially incorporated as Melbourne, named after a city in Australia. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Melbourne experienced periods of growth and prosperity, particularly during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. However, like many other cities, Melbourne was hit hard by the Great Depression and struggled economically for many years. In the latter half of the 20th century, Melbourne began to thrive once again, becoming a popular destination for retirees and tourists seeking a relaxed coastal lifestyle. Today, Melbourne is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant arts scene, and strong sense of community.
