Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1867 by former slaves and Civil War veterans seeking refuge and opportunity in the post-war South. Named after the bustling city in Australia, Melbourne quickly grew as a hub for agriculture, commerce, and industry in the region. In the early 20th century, Melbourne became a popular destination for tourists and winter residents, attracted by its mild climate and beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coast. The city experienced a population boom during World War II, when it became a key location for military training and operations. In the decades that followed, Melbourne continued to grow and develop into a vibrant community known for its aerospace industry, with companies such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman establishing a presence in the area. Today, Melbourne is a thriving city with a diverse population, strong economy, and a rich cultural heritage that celebrates its history and achievements.
