Manchester, New Hampshire was originally settled by the Pennacook Native American tribe. In 1722, the area was granted to soldiers who had fought in King Philip’s War, but it wasn’t until 1751 that the town of Derryfield was officially incorporated. In 1810, the town was renamed Manchester in honor of the industrial city in England, due to its booming textile industry. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, once the largest textile producer in the world, was headquartered in Manchester and employed thousands of workers.
