Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Madison, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 and named after former President James Madison. Originally inhabited by the Ho-Chunk and other Native American tribes, the area’s strategic location between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona made it a prime settlement spot for Euro-American settlers. During the Civil War, Madison served as a vital center for the Union Army, housing Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Randall. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth and development, becoming the state capital in 1848. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Madison became known for its vibrant cultural scene, bustling economy, and prestigious University of Wisconsin-Madison. The city also played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, with activists like Vel Phillips and Lloyd Barbee leading the charge for racial equality. Today, Madison is a diverse and progressive city known for its forward-thinking policies, beautiful lakes, and thriving arts and music scenes. It continues to be a hub for education, innovation, and activism in the Midwest.
