Macon, Georgia was founded in 1823 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River by the Georgia General Assembly and named after Nathaniel Macon, a prominent North Carolina politician. The city quickly became a transportation hub, with the river providing a vital link to the booming cotton industry and the newly constructed Georgia Railroad connecting Macon to the rest of the state. During the Civil War, Macon served as a Confederate industrial and supply center, producing weapons, uniforms, and other materials for the Southern army. After the war, Macon experienced a period of economic growth and modernization, with the establishment of textile mills, railroads, and educational institutions like Mercer University. Throughout the 20th century, Macon continued to grow and diversify, becoming known for its music scene, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural community. Today, Macon remains a thriving Southern city with a rich history and a bright future.

Fountain of Juice
Location: 4123 Forsyth Rd Suite I, Macon, GA 31210
Fountain of Juice (FOJ) started off as a sandwich and smoothie shop, but morphed into one of Macon’s major players for lunch, dinner, and catering. There’s not a day when FOJ’s location in the Prado isn’t crowded. While there are plenty of menu options to choose from, people can’t go wrong with a sandwich and lightly sweetened green tea. Save some space for whatever’s in the dessert case, too.
Papouli’s Mediterranean Cafe and Market
Location: 121 Tom Hill Sr Blvd, Macon, GA 31210
Papouli’s has been serving Maconites Mediterranean and Greek food since 1986, making it a trusted restaurant institution in the local community. Founded by the Patras family, Papouli’s is one of north Macon’s go-to spots for takeout lunch or dinner, although the recently updated menu and renovated space make for a pleasant dine-in experience. Don’t skip purchasing something from the display case when paying for a meal here. The market’s selections do not disappoint.
Dawson’s Kitchen
Location: 3360 Brookdale Ave, Macon, GA 31204
Located right off Macon’s main artery Vineville Avenue, Dawson’s Kitchen boasts some of the best Southern food in the area. The cafeteria-style counter restaurant slings Southern classics like fried chicken, hamburger steak, and salmon croquettes as well as a who’s who of sides — this is a meat and two, after all. Right across the room, choose from a selection of fresh local produce and in-house baked goods.
H&H Soul Food
Location: 807 Forsyth St, Macon, GA 31201
When Maconites seek comfort food, H&H is where they head for it. Founded in 1959 by the late “Mama Inez” Hill and her late goddaughter and cousin “Mama Louise” Hudson, H&H has served its no-frills fare to a wide variety of clientele over the years, including the Allman Brothers, civil rights activists, and Oprah Winfrey. The restaurant now operates under the Moonhanger Group and Hudson. While soul food staples are certainly part of the draw, H&H offers some of the best breakfast in Bibb County.
Grow fresh local food
Location: 1019 Riverside Dr, Macon, GA 31201
High quality, local ingredients give Grow’s Southern-influenced fare an edge. The menu fails to disappoint in terms of taste, and has a steady roster of vegetarian and vegan options, too. Meat-eaters are especially fond of the Soul Bowl, which is made with local sausage, collards, rice, field peas, pico de gallo, and cornbread.
