Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Lynchburg, Virginia was founded in 1786 by John Lynch, who established a ferry service across the James River at the site of what is now known as Lynchburg. The city quickly grew into a bustling industrial center due to its strategic location along the river, making it an important hub for trade and commerce. During the Civil War, Lynchburg played a significant role as a key transportation center for the Confederacy, with several major railroads passing through the city. This brought both prosperity and turmoil to Lynchburg, as it became a target for Union forces seeking to disrupt Confederate supply lines. In the decades following the war, Lynchburg experienced continued growth and development, becoming known for its thriving tobacco and textile industries. The city also became a center for education and culture, with institutions such as Lynchburg College and Randolph College contributing to its intellectual vibrancy. Today, Lynchburg is a vibrant city known for its historic architecture, scenic beauty, and thriving arts community. Its rich history and diverse economy continue to attract visitors and residents alike.
