Louisville, Kentucky, founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark, has a rich and diverse history. Initially named after King Louis XVI of France, the city quickly grew into a major transportation hub due to its strategic location along the Ohio River. In the early 19th century, Louisville became known for its booming river trade and steamboat industry. During the Civil War, Louisville was an important Union stronghold and was the site of several battles and skirmishes. Following the war, the city experienced rapid industrialization and became a major center for tobacco and bourbon production. Today, Louisville is known for its horse racing heritage, with the famous Kentucky Derby taking place annually at Churchill Downs. The city is also home to the Muhammad Ali Center, honoring the legendary boxer who was born and raised in Louisville.
