Los Angeles, California, fondly known as the “City of Angels,” has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. Originally inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash Native American tribes, the region was first explored by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In 1781, the city was officially founded by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, who named it El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciúncula). Throughout the 19th century, Los Angeles experienced rapid growth due to the Gold Rush, the completion of the transcontinental railroad, and the discovery of oil. By the early 20th century, it had emerged as a bustling metropolis and a major center for the film industry, earning the nickname “Hollywood.” Today, Los Angeles is a global hub for entertainment, technology, and culture, known for its iconic landmarks, diverse population, and vibrant arts scene.
