Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Long Beach, California has a rich history that dates back to the indigenous Tongva people who inhabited the area for thousands of years. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived and claimed the land for Spain. The city’s name, “Long Beach,” is believed to have originated from the Spanish term “Laguna de Los Paisos Largos,” meaning “Lagoon of the Long Beaches.” In the late 19th century, Long Beach developed as a seaside resort town and became a major port for shipping and oil production in the early 20th century. The city experienced a population boom during World War II when it served as a major naval base for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Today, Long Beach is a vibrant city known for its diverse population, beautiful beaches, and thriving arts and culture scene. It is home to the Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific, and the annual Long Beach Grand Prix, making it a popular destination for tourists and residents alike.
