Long Beach, California has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the indigenous Tongva people who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The land was later colonized by Mexico and eventually became part of the United States following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. In the late 19th century, Long Beach began to flourish as a shipping port and oil drilling center, attracting a wave of immigrants seeking new opportunities. The city experienced rapid growth in the early 20th century with the development of its waterfront and the establishment of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
