Lexington, Kentucky, founded in 1775, has a rich history as one of the oldest cities in the state. Originally known as Fort-on-the-Hill, it was established as a settlement during the American Revolutionary War. The city was named after Lexington, Massachusetts, the site of the first battle of the revolution. In the early 19th century, Lexington grew rapidly as a center of agriculture, education, and culture in Kentucky. It became known as the “Athens of the West” for its numerous educational institutions and intellectual community. The city also played a significant role in the abolitionist movement, serving as a stop on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Lexington was a key strategic location and saw several battles and skirmishes. After the war, the city experienced economic growth and industrialization, becoming a prominent hub for the horse breeding and racing industry. Today, Lexington is a bustling city known for its historic architecture, vibrant arts scene, and thriving bourbon distilleries. It continues to be a cultural and economic center in the region.
