Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Lansing, Michigan was founded in 1835 by two brothers from New York, Samuel and Oliver Lansing. Initially established as a trading post along the Grand River, the city quickly grew as a hub for lumber and agriculture industries. In 1847, Lansing was named the state capital of Michigan, after a contentious battle with Detroit and Ann Arbor. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lansing continued to expand, becoming a center for automotive manufacturing thanks to the presence of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company and later, the headquarters of the REO Motor Car Company. In the mid-20th century, Lansing faced economic struggles as the automotive industry declined, but has since diversified its economy to include healthcare, education, and government sectors. Today, Lansing is a vibrant and diverse city with a rich history and cultural heritage, attracting residents and visitors alike with its museums, parks, and cultural events.
