Lansing, Michigan was founded in 1835 as the state capital, chosen for its central location within the state. The city was originally a small village named “Michigan” but was later renamed Lansing after the hometown of the co-founder, John Lansing Jr. Lansing quickly grew in the late 19th century as a hub for agriculture and manufacturing industries, benefiting from its position along the Grand River. The completion of the Michigan Central Railroad in the 1870s further spurred economic development in the city. In the early 20th century, Lansing became known for its automotive industry, with companies like Olds Motor Works and Ransom E. Olds’ Reo Motor Car Company establishing operations in the city. The production of automobiles brought a period of prosperity to Lansing, attracting immigrants and fostering a diverse, vibrant community. Today, Lansing is a bustling city with a rich cultural heritage, diverse economy, and a strong commitment to education and the arts. It continues to be a vital center for industry, government, and innovation in the state of Michigan.
