Lansing, Michigan was founded in 1835 as the state capital of Michigan. It was named after John Lansing, Jr., the chief justice of the New York Supreme Court at the time. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to its strategic location along the Grand River and its development as a major industrial center. Lansing became known for its automotive industry, with the establishment of Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897 and later the headquarters of General Motors in 1919. The city continued to prosper throughout the 20th century, attracting more businesses and residents. Today, Lansing is a vibrant and diverse city with a rich cultural heritage. It is home to Michigan State University, numerous museums and theaters, and a thriving arts and music scene. The city continues to grow and evolve, while still honoring its past as the capital of Michigan.
