Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1821 by Frenchman Jean Mouton, Lafayette, Louisiana has a rich history filled with cultural influences. Originally named Vermilionville, the city was later renamed in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero of the American Revolution. The area was originally inhabited by the Attakapas Indians before being settled by French, Spanish, and Acadian settlers. Lafayette became a center of Cajun culture and Creole traditions, with a strong influence of French language and cuisine. The city played a significant role in the Civil War, serving as a Confederate stronghold and later a Union occupation. Following the war, Lafayette experienced a boom in agriculture, particularly in the sugar and oil industries. Today, Lafayette is a vibrant city known for its lively music scene, delicious cuisine, and diverse population. It continues to celebrate its unique cultural heritage while looking towards the future as a thriving hub in the Gulf Coast region.
