Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Knoxville, Tennessee was founded in 1786 by James White, a Revolutionary War veteran, as the capital of the Southwest Territory. The city was strategically located at the confluence of the Holston and French Broad Rivers, making it an important trading center for early settlers and Native American tribes. In the early 19th century, Knoxville grew rapidly as a hub for westward migration and became a key transportation center with the completion of the railroad in the 1850s. During the Civil War, Knoxville played a crucial role as a strategic stronghold for the Union army, hosting several major battles and serving as a supply base for the Union forces in the region. After the war, Knoxville experienced a period of economic growth and industrial development, becoming known for its thriving textile and manufacturing industries. Today, Knoxville is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, home to the University of Tennessee and a growing technology sector. The city’s historic downtown area, eclectic dining scene, and outdoor recreational opportunities make it a popular destination for residents and tourists alike.
