Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Knoxville, Tennessee has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1791 by James White. It was named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War under President George Washington. In the early 19th century, Knoxville served as the capital of the Southwest Territory and later the capital of the state of Tennessee until 1817. During the Civil War, Knoxville was a strategic location for both the Union and Confederate armies, and the city experienced significant growth and development as a result of the war. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Knoxville became a major center for the marble industry, earning it the nickname “The Marble City.” Today, Knoxville is known for its vibrant arts and music scene, with events like the annual Big Ears Festival attracting visitors from around the world. The city is also home to the University of Tennessee, which adds a youthful energy to Knoxville’s historic charm.
