Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Key West, Florida was originally inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta indigenous tribes before being claimed by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century. The island was used as a base for shipwreck salvaging and trading until it came under British control in the late 18th century. In 1822, Key West became part of the United States as part of the Florida Territory. Throughout the 19th century, Key West flourished as a hub for trade, fishing, and shipbuilding. The city’s strategic location made it a key military outpost during the Civil War and Spanish-American War. In the early 20th century, Key West became a popular vacation destination known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning beaches. Today, Key West is a vibrant city known for its colorful architecture, lively nightlife, and diverse cultural heritage. It continues to attract tourists from around the world who come to enjoy its sunny weather, watersports, and unique island charm.
