Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. Key West, Florida was originally inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta Native American tribes. In the early 16th century, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León first visited the island and named it “Cayo Hueso,” which means “Bone Key” in Spanish. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Key West became a strategic location for shipping and salvaging operations in the Caribbean. In the 19th century, Key West grew rapidly as a major hub for trade and fishing, attracting settlers from the United States, Cuba, and the Bahamas. The city’s economy boomed with the development of industries such as cigar manufacturing and sponging. Key West also gained a reputation as a haven for artists, writers, and intellectuals, including famous figures like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. Today, the city is known for its vibrant culture, laid-back atmosphere, and historic architecture. Key West continues to attract tourists from around the world who come to enjoy its beautiful beaches, diverse cuisine, and lively nightlife.
