Jacksonville, Florida, was founded in 1822 by Isaiah D. Hart, who saw the potential for a thriving city due to its strategic location on the St. Johns River. Originally known as Cowford, the city quickly grew into a major port for the transportation of goods and people along the river. During the Civil War, Jacksonville was occupied by Union forces and served as an important supply point for the Union Army.
