Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Jackson, Mississippi was founded in 1821 by Louis LeFleur, a French-Canadian trader, on the site of a trading post established by the Choctaw Indians. The city was named after Andrew Jackson, who would later become the seventh President of the United States. During the Civil War, Jackson was a crucial hub for the Confederacy, serving as a major manufacturing center for war supplies and a key transportation link between the western and eastern theaters of the conflict. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jackson experienced rapid growth and industrialization, becoming known for its cotton and lumber industries. The city also played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, with events such as the Freedom Rides and the assassination of Medgar Evers bringing national attention to racial injustice in the South. Today, Jackson is a vibrant city known for its rich cultural heritage, including blues music, southern cuisine, and historical landmarks. It continues to be a center of commerce and government in Mississippi, with a diverse population and thriving arts scene.
