Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Founded in 1805 by John Hunt, Huntsville, Alabama quickly became a key hub for cotton planters due to its strategic location and fertile land. The city grew rapidly throughout the 19th century, especially during the Civil War when it served as a major center for the Confederacy’s war efforts. After the war, Huntsville continued to thrive as a center for agriculture and industry, with the establishment of textile mills and railroad connections further expanding its economic influence. By the early 20th century, Huntsville had also become known for its vibrant cultural scene, with theaters and music venues attracting both locals and tourists. However, Huntsville truly rose to prominence during the Cold War, when it became home to the United States Army’s Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. These institutions brought a wave of high-tech industry to the city, leading to its nickname “The Rocket City.” Today, Huntsville is a thriving metropolis known for its cutting-edge technology, aerospace industry, and Southern charm.
