Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Houston, Texas was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus and John Allen who named the city after General Sam Houston, the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. The city quickly grew as a hub for cotton and lumber industries due to its strategic location near the Gulf of Mexico. In 1901, the discovery of oil at Spindletop ushered in an economic boom that solidified Houston as a major player in the oil industry. Throughout the 20th century, Houston continued to grow rapidly, becoming a center for aerospace, healthcare, and technology industries. The city also played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement, as it was a key site for protests and marches led by activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today, Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and continues to be a global leader in energy, healthcare, and space exploration. Its diverse population, vibrant cultural scene, and strong economy make it a dynamic and thriving metropolis.
