Welcome to the Newto News for July of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Hattiesburg, Mississippi was founded in 1882 by pioneer lumberman and civil engineer William H. Hardy. Named after Hardy’s wife, Hattie, the city quickly became a hub for the timber industry due to its proximity to the Leaf River and the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. During the early 20th century, Hattiesburg experienced rapid growth and prosperity, with the establishment of numerous sawmills and factories. The city’s economy diversified with the growth of the healthcare, education, and military sectors. Hattiesburg played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement, with local activists organizing sit-ins and protests to combat segregation and racial discrimination. Today, Hattiesburg is known for its vibrant arts and cultural scene, with numerous theaters, galleries, and music venues. The city is also home to the University of Southern Mississippi, providing a strong educational foundation for its residents. Hattiesburg continues to thrive as a diverse and dynamic city, embracing its rich history while looking towards a bright future.
