Founded in 1882 by William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg, Mississippi began as a small lumber town built around the intersection of two rail lines. Named after Hardy’s wife, Hattie, the city quickly grew into a bustling hub of economic activity. The timber industry flourished, attracting numerous businesses and settlers to the area. During the early 20th century, Hattiesburg became known as the “Hub City” due to its central location and role as a transportation center. The city’s population continued to grow, and vital infrastructure such as schools and hospitals were established. In the 1940s, Camp Shelby, a major military training facility, was built nearby, further boosting the local economy. Today, Hattiesburg is a vibrant city known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and community spirit. It is home to the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University, as well as numerous parks, museums, and music venues that attract visitors from all over the region.
