Hattiesburg, Mississippi was founded in 1882 by William H. Hardy, a civil engineer who played a key role in the development of the town. Originally established as a lumber town due to its proximity to the Pearl River, Hattiesburg quickly grew into a thriving community with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. The city was named after Hardy’s wife Hattie and quickly became a major hub for the timber industry in the region. As the timber industry began to decline in the early 20th century, Hattiesburg diversified its economy and became a center for education and healthcare. Today, Hattiesburg is home to the University of Southern Mississippi and several major hospitals, making it a vibrant and diverse city with a rich history. It continues to grow and evolve, while still maintaining its small-town charm and Southern hospitality.
