Welcome to the Newto News for March of 2024. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Harrisonburg, Virginia was founded in 1779 by Thomas Harrison, a Scottish immigrant. Originally known as “Rocktown” due to its proximity to the large boulders that littered the landscape, the town quickly grew into a bustling center for trade and agriculture. During the Civil War, Harrisonburg served as a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces, and the town experienced several skirmishes and raids. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Harrisonburg became known for its thriving textile industry, with numerous mills and factories established in the area. The city continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century, attracting new residents and industries while still maintaining its small-town charm. Today, Harrisonburg is a vibrant community known for its cultural diversity, outdoor recreational opportunities, and thriving local food scene. The city’s historic downtown area is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and galleries, making it a popular destination for both residents and visitors alike.
