Harrisonburg, Virginia was founded in 1779 as a small trading post along the Great Valley Road. Named after Thomas Harrison, a settler who carved out a homestead in the area, the city quickly grew as an important stopping point for travelers moving westward. During the Civil War, Harrisonburg played a crucial role in the Confederate war effort, serving as a supply depot and training ground for Southern soldiers.
