Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gulfport, Mississippi was founded in 1841 by William H. Hardy, a lumberman and shipbuilder from Connecticut. Initially named “Ship Island”, the city quickly grew to become a major port for shipping timber and other goods along the Gulf Coast. In the late 19th century, Gulfport became known for its thriving seafood industry, with shrimping and oyster harvesting becoming significant economic drivers for the community. During World War II, Gulfport played a strategic role as a military supply point and training center, further boosting its economy and population. In the post-war years, the city continued to grow as a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors with its beautiful beaches and vibrant seafood restaurants. Today, Gulfport is a bustling city known for its strong community spirit, diverse economy, and rich cultural heritage. With a strong emphasis on preserving its coastal environment and promoting sustainable growth, Gulfport continues to thrive as a dynamic and welcoming city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
