Welcome to the Newto News for April of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gulfport, Mississippi was founded in 1831 by William H. Hardy, a lumberman from Chicago. Originally established as a lumber port, Gulfport quickly grew into a thriving city due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico. As the lumber industry boomed, Gulfport became a major hub for shipping and trade along the Mississippi coast. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Gulfport experienced a period of rapid industrialization, with the development of seafood processing plants, shipyards, and cotton warehouses. The city also became a popular resort destination, attracting tourists with its beautiful beaches and warm climate. Gulfport was heavily impacted by Hurricane Camille in 1969, which devastated much of the city. However, Gulfport quickly rebounded and rebuilt, emerging as a modern city with a diverse economy that includes tourism, manufacturing, and healthcare. Today, Gulfport is a vibrant community known for its cultural events, historic sites, and beautiful waterfront. It continues to grow and evolve as a key city along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
