Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Greenville, North Carolina, originally known as Martinsborough, was established in 1771 by the colonial government of North Carolina. The city was named after Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero. Greenville grew steadily in the 19th century as a hub for tobacco farming and trading. The arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s further stimulated the city’s growth, leading to an economic boom in the early 20th century. However, Greenville faced challenges during the Great Depression, with many businesses closing and a decline in population. The city rebounded during World War II, as the nearby Camp Lejeune and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base brought increased activity and prosperity. In the post-war years, Greenville experienced rapid industrialization and urban development. Today, Greenville is a vibrant city known for its thriving healthcare and education sectors, with East Carolina University serving as a major economic and cultural hub. The city continues to grow, attracting new residents and businesses with its diverse economy and high quality of life.
