Welcome to the Newto News for May of 2025. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Greensboro, North Carolina, was founded in 1808 and named after General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero. The city quickly grew as a center for textiles and tobacco production, becoming known as the “Gate City” due to its transportation network of railroads and highways. During the Civil War, Greensboro served as a Confederate hospital center and later hosted the surrenders of Confederate generals Joseph E. Johnston and Braxton Bragg, marking the end of the war in the Carolinas. In the 20th century, Greensboro played a significant role in the civil rights movement, most notably with the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins at the Woolworth’s lunch counter, in which four African American students sparked nationwide demonstrations against segregation. Today, Greensboro is a thriving city with a diverse economy, encompassing industries such as biotechnology, healthcare, and education. The city continues to honor its rich history while looking towards a bright future of innovation and progress.
