Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Greensboro, North Carolina, was founded in 1808 and named after Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene. The city quickly became a prominent hub for commerce and transportation due to its strategic location along the railroad lines. During the Civil War, Greensboro served as a vital Confederate supply depot, which led to the city being occupied by Union forces in 1865. After the war, Greensboro experienced rapid industrialization, with textile manufacturing emerging as a major industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1960s, Greensboro gained national attention for its role in the civil rights movement, particularly with the Woolworth sit-ins that sparked demonstrations for racial equality across the country. Today, Greensboro continues to be a thriving city, known for its diverse cultural scene, strong educational institutions, and growing economy. With a population of over 290,000, Greensboro remains a vibrant and dynamic city in North Carolina.
