Welcome to the Newto News for August of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Greensboro, North Carolina, was founded in 1808 and named after Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. The city quickly became a major center for textile production in the 19th century, with mills and factories sprouting up throughout the area. During the Civil War, Greensboro served as a Confederate stronghold and was the site of the last official surrender of the Confederate Army. In the early 20th century, Greensboro’s economy diversified with the growth of industries such as tobacco and furniture manufacturing. The city also became a hub for education, with the founding of prestigious institutions like the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University. Throughout the 20th century, Greensboro was at the forefront of the civil rights movement, most notably with the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins at Woolworth’s lunch counter. Today, Greensboro continues to thrive as a vibrant city with a rich history and a diverse community.
