Galveston, Texas has a rich history dating back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca first landed on the island. The city was officially established in 1839 and quickly became a major port for trade, particularly in cotton. In 1900, a devastating hurricane struck the city, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and massive destruction. In response, the city implemented a comprehensive seawall and raised the elevation of the island to protect against future storms. Despite this setback, Galveston continued to thrive as a major hub for commerce and tourism. During the early 20th century, the city became known as the “Playground of the South” due to its vibrant entertainment scene and luxurious hotels. Today, Galveston is a popular tourist destination known for its historic architecture, sandy beaches, and bustling port.
