Welcome to the Newto News for September of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. Initially established as a small agricultural town, Gainesville quickly grew in size and importance due to its ideal location in the heart of North Florida. The city became a major hub for transportation, commerce, and education in the region. During the Civil War, Gainesville was occupied by Union forces and saw significant destruction. However, the city quickly bounced back after the war and experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The creation of the University of Florida in 1905 further solidified Gainesville’s status as a prominent educational and cultural center. Over the years, Gainesville has continued to thrive and evolve, attracting residents and visitors with its charming downtown area, vibrant arts scene, and natural beauty. Today, Gainesville is known for its historic architecture, diverse population, and innovative industries.
