Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, located in Alachua County, Florida, was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. The city quickly grew as a hub for agriculture, with cotton, oranges, and vegetables being major crops in the area. During the Civil War, Gainesville was occupied by Union forces, leading to economic hardships for residents. However, the city rebounded in the late 19th century when the railroad arrived, bringing new opportunities for trade and commerce. In the 20th century, Gainesville became known as a center for education and culture, with the founding of the University of Florida in 1905. The university’s growth spurred development in the city, attracting more residents and businesses. Today, Gainesville is a thriving city known for its college town atmosphere, diverse community, and natural beauty. It continues to grow and evolve, while still retaining its historic charm and Southern hospitality.
