Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a commander during the Seminole Wars. The city grew steadily over the years, attracting settlers with its fertile land and strategic location along major transportation routes. During the Civil War, Gainesville served as a key Confederate stronghold, supplying troops and resources to the war effort. After the war, the city experienced a period of economic stagnation but rebounded in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of the University of Florida in 1906. Throughout the 20th century, Gainesville continued to grow and diversify, becoming known for its vibrant cultural scene, thriving business community, and strong ties to the agriculture and technology industries. Today, Gainesville is a bustling city with a rich history and a promising future.
