Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1854 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a commander during the Seminole Wars. The city grew steadily over the years, attracting settlers with its fertile land and strategic location along major transportation routes. During the Civil War, Gainesville served as a key Confederate stronghold, supplying troops and resources to the war effort. After the war, the city experienced a period of economic stagnation but rebounded in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of the University of Florida in 1906.
