Welcome to the Newto News for January of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1854 when the city was established as a junction for two railroad lines. Named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the Seminole Wars, the city quickly grew due to its strategic location and fertile land. In the late 19th century, Gainesville became known as a hub for education with the founding of the East Florida Seminary, which later evolved into the University of Florida in 1906. During the Civil War, Gainesville was occupied by Union troops, resulting in significant damage to the city. However, in the years following the war, Gainesville experienced a period of growth and prosperity as agriculture and industry boomed. Today, Gainesville is a thriving city known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, historic architecture, and natural beauty. Home to the University of Florida, Gainesville continues to be a center for education and innovation in North Central Florida.
