Welcome to the Newto News for February of 2026. My name is Zack Cockfield, and my team and I created Newtomedia as a way for visitors or new residents to get information about a city. Each month we bring together resources that will update you on the history, amenities, culture, future opportunities and all other things inside a city that make it unique. We also hope to be a resource for connecting you with people and businesses that can help you live a better life. If you find our efforts useful, please click on the links to get more information!

Gainesville, Florida was founded in 1853 and named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. Initially, the city served as a trading post and transportation hub for the surrounding agricultural area. During the Civil War, Gainesville was a strategic location for both Union and Confederate forces trying to gain control of Florida. The city suffered from skirmishes and battles, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure. In the late 19th century, Gainesville experienced a period of growth and prosperity as the citrus and lumber industries boomed. The University of Florida was founded in Gainesville in 1906, bringing an influx of students and academics to the city. In the 1960s, Gainesville played a prominent role in the civil rights movement, with students from the university participating in sit-ins and protests. Today, Gainesville is a vibrant city known for its cultural events, natural beauty, and academic institutions.
